What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient Indian spiritual discipline that unites body, mind, and consciousness. The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit root "yuj" meaning "to join" or "to unite." It encompasses physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), meditation, and ethical principles.

The Eight Limbs of Yoga (Ashtanga)

  1. Yama: Ethical restraints (non-violence, truth, non-stealing, continence, non-possessiveness)
  2. Niyama: Personal observances (purity, contentment, discipline, self-study, surrender)
  3. Asana: Physical postures
  4. Pranayama: Breath control
  5. Pratyahara: Withdrawal of senses
  6. Dharana: Concentration
  7. Dhyana: Meditation
  8. Samadhi: Union/absorption

The Spiritual Dimensions of Yoga

Yoga is not merely physical exercise. It is a complete spiritual path leading to self-realization. Through asanas, the body becomes strong and flexible enough for prolonged meditation. Through pranayama, the vital energy is controlled and directed. Through meditation, the mind is stilled and the true Self is revealed.
